PAYING FOR SOLAR IN 2026
Financing, Grants, and Payment Options
The 30 percent federal credit ended on December 31, 2025. These are the programs still standing, sorted by who they are for.
If you own a home
Montana property tax exemption
First $20,000 of appraised value exempt for ten years. Solar equipment qualifies.
Montana DEQ energy loan
3.5 percent fixed, up to $40,000 over ten years. Four application windows a year.
Local lenders
Clearwater Credit Union’s solar loan. We have also worked with Whitefish Credit Union and Glacier Bank.
If you run a farm or rural business
USDA rural energy program
Grants are paused while USDA rewrites the rules. Guaranteed loans are still being accepted, for farms and for businesses in towns under 50,000 people.
Montana property tax exemption
Up to $100,000 of appraised value on a non-residential structure, for ten years.
Montana DEQ energy loan
Open to small businesses with 100 or fewer employees, at the same 3.5 percent fixed rate.
