Off‑grid solar installation in northwest Montana

Your own power plant, on your own land. Solar, batteries, and wind where the site calls for it, engineered to run a cabin or a home past the end of the lines through a full Montana winter.

The power line stops at the end of the county road, and the utility’s price to bring it the rest of the way is often more than the power it would ever carry. An off‑grid system ends that conversation. Panels make the power, a battery bank carries it through the night and the grey days, and where the site calls for it, a turbine like the one pictured above shares the load. No meter, no bill, no line to come down in an ice storm. The well, the freezer, the lights, the internet, the heat: all of it runs on what your land makes.

Every system starts from the site itself: how the sun crosses the clearing, what the road is like in March, what you need to run, and what you are willing to go without. Nothing here comes off a shelf. Winter comes first in the design. The array and the bank are sized around December, when the sun clears the ridge late and drops behind it early, so July takes care of itself. We service what we sell, and labor and every piece of equipment carry a warranty.

“When I needed to find someone to design and install an off-grid solar power system I chose Northstone Solar for the project.

They worked with me for weeks to custom build a system suited to my particular site and budget. It could have been an ordeal-it wasn’t. They are kind, honest, fair and I trust their judgement.

They love what they do and working with them has been my favorite part of this build.

I will never hesitate to recommend Northstone to anyone considering solar power.”

Off‑grid solar in a Montana winter

Winter is where an off‑grid design is won. The array, the battery bank, and wind where a site calls for it are sized around how you actually live out there in the dark months, so the system carries the year, not just the summer.

Questions about off‑grid systems

How far out do you go for off‑grid work?
The North Fork and beyond. Our service area runs the North Fork to Libby, and off‑grid cabins up the North Fork are part of the regular work. If the road is passable, we are on it.
How do you design for a Montana winter?
Winter comes first. The array, the battery bank, and wind where a site calls for it are sized around December, the shortest and darkest month, so the system carries the whole year and July takes care of itself.
Is solar plus wind a real option?
Yes. On a site with wind, a turbine makes power on the grey, windy days when the panels make the least, which is exactly when an off‑grid bank needs it. We have built hybrid systems where a turbine works alongside the array; one of them is pictured at the top of this page.
How custom does an off‑grid design get?
Fully custom. Off‑grid work starts from the site, the loads, and the budget, and weeks of back and forth is normal; one ranch owner wrote that we worked with them for weeks to custom build a system suited to their site and budget. Out there, the system is the utility, so it has to fit the place, and it does.
